NBA Conflicts
One major selfish act is the feud
between Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe
Bryant. Bryant is the league's leading
scorer and seems to take a shot every time
he gets his hands on the ball. Shaq is
much the same type of player as Bryant.
As you can see there is quite a problem
when it comes to who gets the ball when
the Los Angeles Lakers are on offense.
Shaq supposedly wanted a trade because
the feuding was getting out of hand. It
was a very childish act that has not been
resolved.
The worst part of this whole situation
is that Phil Jackson is stuck in the middle
of it. He may be the best coach of the
modern era. He ranks at the top of almost
any coaching list that implies greatness.
Jackson himself was quoted saying the
feud was very childish and that basketball
should not take a back seat to wanting to
pad someone's stats. The other players
are also stuck in the middle of this feud
and it is upsetting a few of them as the
[Akers have not been playing up to their
standards. Ron Harper reacted after a
recent loss to the Miami Heat, "We stink.
If this team comes out to score 100 points
on us, we've got to stink," Harper said.
"They came out early, hit shots, and their
guys played harder. They deserved to win
the game."
A few other items are worth discussing.
Recently Tyrone Nesby was supposed to
go before league officials regarding some
disorderly conduct according to the

standards of the NBA. However, Nesby did
not show up. He must not of thought that it
was that important. The fines and suspensions
will go up if a player does not attend hearings.
I suppose that never occurred to Nesby, or he
did not care about forking over some more
money. He should have it, after all.
Perhaps the most vivid incident that
allowed for this loss of respect toward the
NBA occurred about two weeks ago in New
York. New York has always been labeled as
a tough team that may get into an argument
here and there. This is especially true when
they play the Miami Heat or Indiana Pacers,
two rivals that always seem to play the Knicks
in the playoffs. Well, unfortunately, yet
another dispute broke out in New York with
Marcus Camby as the guilty party.
In a game against the San Antonio Spurs
Camby was poked in the eye by Danny Ferry.
It is not clear whether it was on purpose or
not. Camby got upset, and after some jawing
on the floor, he ran after Ferry and attempted
to deliver a blow. He lunged forward and
caught his coach, Jeff Van Gundy, in the eye
with his forehead and caused the coach 15
stitches. Camby was suspended 5 games and
$7500. It was a totally uncalled for
occurrence. Camby was thought of as a
strategic player. He took advantage of some
injuries in the past couple seasons and showed
fans at Madison Square Garden just what he
could do for their team. Now he wanted to
show them that he could get into a ring too, if
need be. The irony of the situation is that
Kurt Thomas will start in place of Camby.
Thomas has been known to have a temper
now and then, especially when he played the
Knicks as a member of the Heat.
A few other items are worth noting. Jason
Kidd has supposedly been abusive to his wife.

Gary Payton was recently suspended for
losing his temper on his coach in the locker
room. Two of the league'rbest guards should
not be showing the world that off the court is
a totally different story.
Maybe the NBA can recover from these
events. They do have a few months of the
season left to show that the NBA is worthy
of good attention. Luckily the league still
has people like Tim Duncan and David
Robinson to let fans know it's not all bad.

Swim team looks forward
to second half of season
by Bob Palivoda
staff writer
The long Christmas break did not stop the
Penn State Behrend swim team from accom
plishing new goals in the Edinboro Invita
tional at the McComb Field House on Janu
ary 20.
Although the women's team lost 125-56
and the men's lost 116-67, coach Josh
Heynes was satisfied with the effort of the
team.
"Despite the loss, I was very happy with
the individual times of each swimmer. I was
very pleased with the results", exclaimed
coach Heynes. "This tells me a lot about
what type of training we are doing."
Coach Heynes does have good reason to
be satisfied with his team as the individual
times of his swimmers improved greatly.
The improved times were reflected by some
swimmers shaving off almost 8 seconds from
their normal times.
Adam DeMarco placed first in the Men's
1650 Meter Freestyle. Teammate Mark
Ostrzeniec also had a great day, placing first
in the Men's 50 Meter Freestyle and the 100
Meter Breast Stroke.
Lindsay Spiegel placed first for the
women in the 100 Meter Breast Stroke.

Both the women and men's teams placed
first in the 200 Meter Freestyle. The
women's team, in this event, consisted of
Joanne McCole, Denise Gorman, Nhien
Hguyen, and Kristin Campbell. The Men's
team consisted of Adam Demarco, Brian
Vallor, Dario Kis, and Chad Holzshu.
The improvements made by the Penn
State Behrend swim team are phenomenal
considering they have not had a swimming
pool to call their own. Instead the team
had been practicing at Harbor Creek High
until January 18, 2001. It was on this date
that the ARC opened its doors to the swim
team and gave them a pool on campus.
"We are all excited and appreciative of
the athletic department to get us in there
ASAP," commented coach Heynes.
PSU Behrend now looks forward to their
next match against W & J and Frostburg
on Wednesday, January 24, at 4:00 PM.
"We have Frostburg in our sights since
they are in the AMCC and we will see them
at the Grove City Invitational in February,"
coach Heynes remarked.
Coach ITeynes' spirits are high, the team
is improving dramatically, and they now
have a pool to call home. The team hopes
to have a strong second half of the season.
