Head coach stresses teamwork to increase league success
The men's defense is looking to control their AMCC foes
by Mike Bello

One key element every winning team
needs is poise; being able to put the past
behind them while looking to the future.

tough 4-point loss to key AMCC rival Pitt-
Bradford on January 10. The win, which
upped the Lions' record to 5-9 on the
season, was a tune-up for the last ten
games of the season in which Behrend
plays their AMCC opponents in nine of
those contests.
Inconsistency, the name of the game for
Behrend most of the season, was evident in

the Thiel game as well. Behrend's defense
came out ready to play, holding Thiel to eight
first half baskets, including two free throws,
for a commanding 34-15 halftime lead. The
Lions' defense slacked a little in the second
half, allowing Thiel to convert more than
50% of their shots after the break. However,
it was not enough to overcome Behrend's
steady offensive attack, and therefore
dropped Thiel's record to 6-9 for the year.
Dave Hairston led the way with 17 points,
his season high, on 7-10 shooting despite
being limited to 16 minutes of playing time.
Freshman Casey Ponsoll dropped in 15
points on the night, while lone senior Ashley
Orris contributed 14 points, including three
3-pointers, to the winning effort. James
Curren added nine points for the Lions and
had a game high nine rebounds as well. For
the game, Behrend shot 42% from the field
and was 19-25 from the free throw line.
Thiel, on the other hand, was only 6-6 from
the line.
On Wednesday, January 17, Behrend
traveled to Frostburg, Maryland, to take on
the Bobcats of Frostburg State University.
The 'Cats, 9-4 overall, have greatly
improved from last year's 6-19 record to
become a force to be reckoned with in the
AMCC.

that is out there right now. "It's a different
situation than in years past because we don't
have much experience. To do a lot of drastic
changing here and there, it doesn't make a lot
of sense," said Niland. "We've got a lot of
young guys. It's going to be a process. It's
just a matter of getting our individual talents
to develop as a team." All in all, every game
the Lions play is one more game under their
belt and one more game of building team
chemistry.
On Saturday, January 20, Behrend plays
host to Pitt-Greensburg. Also nicknamed the
Bobcats, Pitt-Greensburg enters the contest
with a 1-13 record under the guidance of first
year head coach Karl Radday. The 'Cats ( 21-
9 a year ago), like Behrend, have struggled as
a result of the loss of key senior players from
last year's team, and like Behrend are less than
average in size, with no player over 6'4 - .
Senior Josh Sapotichne leads the Bobcats
with 21 points per game, near the top of the
league leader board. Stopping him will be
the key for the Lions, as only one other player,
Rick Leahew (12.9), is averaging more than
ten points a game for Pitt-Greensburg. The
`Cats are scoring 67 points per game, but are
giving up a horrendous 85.6 points per game.
They are scoring on 38% of their shots taken
but are letting opponents shoot at nearly a 50%
clip.
On Wednesday, January 24, Behrend will
he the guest when they play Lake Erie College
(located east ofCleveland), who come in with
a 6-9 record so for. The Storm, as they are
referred to, right now have the fourth seed in
the conference, just ahead of Behrend.

CLASSIFIEDS
Although it may he too early to tell, Lake
Erie, at least for the moment, looks to he one
of the teams Behrend may have to battle it
out with for an AMCC postseason seed.
Behrend has already lost to La Roche and
Pitt-Greensburg, the numbers two and three
seeds respectively, so the young Lions will
need to mature very quickly if they want a
chance to compete in the postseason.
Ashley Orris continues to provide
leadership with his young teammates as
the team focuses on league play.
