Ice cream Wintergarden United Way hosts ice cream social to kick off student campaign by Libbie Johnson staff writer No, Provost and Dean John Lilley was not training for Baskin-Robbins when he was scooping free ice cream last week: neither were Senior Asso ciate Provost and Senior Associate Dean Jack Burke nor Associate Pro vost and Associate Dean Bob Light. Instead, they were promoting United Way, the only charity officially en dorsed by the University. To raise awareness of United Way, the campaign committee hosted a free ice cream social. Catherine Hanhauser, Administrative Assistant for the Provost, has served as coordi nator of the campaign for four years. She said, "the reason for the ice cream social was to generate more visibil ity, increase participation and to add some fun to the campaign." The ice cream was shipped from the Univer sity Creamery. Hanhauser said, "more than 70 vol unteers will help with the faculty/staff segment of the campaign, which hopes to reach the $33,000 goal set for the college." Each volunteer is assigned approximately five individu als from whom they are asked to so licit donations. The ice cream social was held on October 11 in Reed Wintergarden. From 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m, volunteers helped the United Way chairs serve over 500 visitors to the United Way Tent. Lilley said, "I constantly ask the community to support Behrend, and Behrend's support of United Way is symbolic, and in fact a true way of giving back to the community." According to Hanhauser, the ice cream social was successful. She said, "student interest has increased sharply and faculty/staff progress has shown a steady increase." The Provost is sponsoring the Stu dent United Way Campaign-Vote for Your School the United Way! On Oc tober 11 and 12, booths were set up around campus from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Students were able to vote by do nating a dollar into a can labeled with the school of their choice. The schools represented were Business, Engineer ing & Engineering Technology, Hu manities & Social Sciences, and Sci ence. After donating the dollar, stu dents received a pin showing that they had donated. Jen Miles, SGA President and United Way Campaign co-chair said, "we're trying to create a sense of com petition among the schools. We [hose leaves sure look pretty on that tree beside Glenhill, don't they? However, they are also a lot of fun to jump in when they are on the ground. Especially when the Behrend staff blows them into nice big piles for us outside of Erie Hall. Maybe everyone should make a detour on the way to that next class. thought competition would be an in centive for people to give more than just one dollar." The students raised $402.88. Kate Dallenbach, an eighth semes ter Marketing student, helped solicit donations at one of the booths. She said, "it's nice to contribute to a good cause." Dallenbach felt that donat ing the money was also a good way to promote school spirit. "We want everyone to have a pin." Briana Kriebel and Emily Ruben also collected contributions. They both felt that even if students could only donate spare change, it would still be helpful. "Every little bit helps," Kriebel said. Ruben agreed, saying "people don't think giving a couple cents here and there helps, but it does." Peg Thorns, Associate Professor of Management, is campus co-chair. She said, - our primary goal is to introduce students to United Way." She added that the money raised will go to the United Way general fund.
