Cross Country gears up for regionals by Douglas Smith sports editor The past two Saturdays, the Penn State Behrend men's and women's cross country teams have competed against some tough competition at two different meets. On October 7, the men's team finished 24th, with the women's team finishing 28th. On October 14, the men finished 7th, with the women finishing 6th. These two meets are two of the final meets this year. On October 7, the cross country teams competed in the Dickinson Invitational. There were 39 teams in the men's bracket, and 46 teams in the women's bracket, seven of which were incomplete teams. The men's field included Connecticut, Kutztown, Carnegie Mellon, Allegheny, and Thaddeus Stevens Tech. Kevin Ritzert finished first for Behrend with a time of 27:46.6. Sohrab Moeini and Dennis Halaszynski were close behind. The women's field included Johns Hopkins. Ithaca, Swarthmore, and Juniata. Lvndsey Boor came across the line first for Behrend with a time of 21:05.b. Andrea Sanko, Deidre Garrity, and Kathy Perry were all across during the 21-minute. "Our w omen rebounded with a solid race. Both teams had a great opportunity to run against a very deep and talented field with over 40 schools represented. This was great preparation for our regionals in November," said Coach Rich Hoffman about the Dickinson Men's soccer looks to salvage mediocre season by Mike Bello staff writer As the soccer season heads into the final few weeks before the AMCC tournament, the men's soccer team finds itself with a 6-7-1 record leading into the last few games. With just a small amount of the season left, the Lions can gain momentum as they head into the playoffs. This comes after a fall break trip to Montana, playing some very different teams. This trip and the last game played in the conference had nothing more than a mediocre result with the Behrend men going 1-2. The Behrend Lions' two games over fall break both turned out to be nail biters. In the first game against Montana State-Billings, the Behrend Lions were able to build a 2-0 lead, thanks to goals by Ryan Ohl and Mark Szewczykowski, only to have Montana come back with three unanswered goals in the second period to down Behrend. Jacob Hordych, in his first start of the season, was able to make five saves in a losing cause. Behrend bounced back in the second game of the trip, defeating Colorado College 1-0. Senior midfielder James Martin set up fellow ATTN: All Behrend Students! At all Behrend home sporting events, spirit paraphernalia will be given to students. Such prizes include spirit T-shirts, hats, and food, like Bruno's pizza. Invitational On October 14, the teams were involved in the Rochester Invitational. The meet was a quite a bit smaller with only nine squads on hand. However, the course was much more demanding. Ritzert once again finished first. This time, he came across in 28:37.0. The way the men finished stayed consistent for the most part. Ritzert finished 14th overall. Boor finished in 21:47.0, and in first for Behrend women again. However, the team's overall time was slower. No other runner hit the finish until Garrity came across at 22:11.0. However, Coach Hoffman was using the meet as a sort of 'glorified practice.' "The purpose of this meet, our objective, was not to worry about times, but to go out and work on being competitive and aggressive, especially the second half of the race. This is the most challenging hilly course we have run, so times are irrelevant. Both teams I think accomplished our goals and should have momentum heading into the AMCC. We are in good shape and a good frame of mind. Our women were right behind Hope College of Michigan, who are traditionally one of the best women's programs in the country, and are starting to beat some very respectable programs. Our men have been solid the last few weeks and are ready to make good things happen. Everyone's been training hard with great attitude, despite the lingering fatigue. As we start tapering it will be exciting to see the results," said Hoffman. midfielder Dan Falk with a pass that allowed Falk to get a shot that Colorado's goalie was able to get a piece of, but still allowed past him. Even though Colorado College managed 18 shots compared to Behrend's 9, both teams each only had three real scoring chances. Senior goalie Tommy Sieg was able to stop all three, and record his third sole shutout on the year. He also shared one with Hordych earlier in the season. The Lions' next game came this past Saturday in Frostburg. Despite battling to the end, Behrend came out with a 5-4 loss in two overtimes. Back-and-forth scoring marked the game. Sieg again was in goal, making 8 saves while Szewczykowski added two scores in the losing effort. A late Wednesday game was played against Lake Erie. Results will be published next week. The next game is tomorrow against Brockport on the Behrend Fields. Even though their record doesn't show it, the men's soccer team has played well. Many games have been close this season. With only two games after Saturday's showdown against Brockport, the Behrend Lions have only a limited time in which to set things straight in their run for the coveted AMCC title. TEAM!
