PAGE 2, THE BEHREND BEACON, SEPTEMBER 10, 1999 NEWS AND WEATHER Cultural events highlight this upcoming school year by Mike Frawley managing editor The Behrend Speaker Series is pre paring to open another year of pre sentations in a few weeks. The theme for this years series is Taking Charge: Politics, Finances, and Personal Free dom. The plan for this series is to fo cus on current affairs, the ongoing political and social struggles of women and minorities, and personal finance. The series is funded in part by the John Nesbit Rees and Sarah Henne Rees Charitable Foundation. Chris Rizzo, Director of the Student Activities, said, "this year the Speaker Series promises to he packed with major personalities, ideas and issues." The series will he kicked off on Wednesday, October 6, by Al Franken, with his speech titled, An Evening with Al Franken. Franken is best known for his political charac terizations that he performed on Sat urday Night Live. The second event scheduled is a debate between James Carville and Angela "Bay - Buchanan, titled A Look at American Politics, on Tues day, November 9. Carville is an im portant member of the Democratic Party, a best selling author, presiden tial advisor, and Clinton campaign i Question 0 What is your prediction for the Rranns vs. Steclers game? `All I know is the Steelers are going to win." Marta Gonzalez, 07, Management `Browns, because the Steelers stink this year." Kristina Davis, 11, Management `3-2, Pittsburgh." `I think the Steelers will win, 21-7." Buchanan, a Republican, is a former United States treasurer, former co-host of CNBC's Equal Time, and political campaign man ager for her brother, presidential can didate Pat Buchanan. The next speaker is Sonia Sanchez, with her speech, Poet as Creator of Social Values, on Monday, January 17. Dr. Sanchez is an internationally recognized poet, activist, and lecturer. Sanchez's writing deals with women's lives, the struggles and triumphs of people of color, and other global hu manist themes. The final speaker is Jane Bryant Quinn, The Economy and Your Money.com. The speaker is sched uled for Tuesday April 4. Quinn is an award winning columnist for Newsweek, and is a leading commen tator on personal finance issues. Penn State Erie also will be open ing the tenth anniversary season of Music at Noon: The Logan Wintergarden Series with a perfor mance by the Manhattan Wind Quin tet. The performance, which will take place on Tuesday, September 21, and is free and open to the public, will take place in the Wintergarden of the College's Reed Union Building. Arts educator and musician Kay Logan created this series at Penn State Behrend in 1989 as a way of bringing classical music to all audiences. including children. Logan invites world-class musicians to play and try to involve their audi ences in dialogue during their perfor- This tenth anniversary season will Differ a variety of musical groups that everyone will he ahle to enjoy. The first live ensembles are considered to he the best of all of the past Logan Series performers.
