Behrend Athletics had a year to
remember in its 1998-99 schedule.
Many Lions’ teams set new school
records with four teams capturing
the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate
Conference (AMCC)
Championship. Some teams earned
regional rankings while the college
added another Eastern Collegiate
Athletic Conference to its trophy
case.
The spring season saw both the
men’s and women’s soccer teams
excel under the direction of head
coach Dan Perritano.
THE MEN’S SOCCER TEAM
won a school record, 13 wins in a
year that saw them earn an NCAA
Division HI, North East Regional
Poll ranking for the third
consecutive season. The men’s
season was also highlighted with a
2-1 win over the Gators of
Allegheny College. The Lions
advanced to the AMCC
Championship game after a 2-1 win
over Pitt-Bradford. Frostburg then
defeated the Lions in the finale, 4-
0.
THE WOMEN REPEATED AS
AMCC Champions for the second
straight season. The Behrend
women then qualified for the ECAC
Tournament after a season that saw

WOMEN’S TENNIS
NETTED AN AMCC
Championship behind first
year head coach Jeff Barger.
The Lions hosted the
tournament and outplayed
Frostburg for a 14
score win. Swinging in the
All-AMCC team were JoAnn
Fabrizio and Angela Albertson (first
team singles), Jamie Brubaker, Emily
Rubin, Jen Morton and Christine Chan
(second-team singles). Albertson,
Brubaker and Morton, Chan were also
named to the second team doubles.
RICH HOFFMAN JOINED the
Behrend community this fall as he led
the Lions’ cross country teams to a
successful season. The men placed
second at the AMCC Championships
with many individuals receiving All-
Conference recognition. Adam
Dzuricky. Mark Suroviee Tyler Travis
and Brian Gaines were named first
team with Gaines also being named
Newcomer of the Year. The women
also placed second with Abby Crilley
receiving All-Conference recognition.

Coach Hottman was named the men’s
Coach ol the Year in his first season.
THE LADY'S VOLLEYBALL
TEAM faced tough competition
Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference
throughout the season but continued to
show improvement. Mary Good,
Tanya Deats, and Heather Lerch all
played well through the season and
give the Lions a bright future.
The winter season proved to be the
most successful for the Behrend
Athletics’ program. Both basketball
teams brought excitement to Erie Hall
due to the great promotions planned by
Brian Streeter.
THE ECAC CHAMPION LIONS
had a record breaking season behind
the coaching of Dave Niland. The
Behrend men won the regular season
AMCC Championship, but fell short
in the AMCC Tournament to Laßoche
in the first round. The men won a
school record 21 games, with their 21 st

coming in the ECAC Championship
against host Gettysburg. Being
named to the All-Conference team
were Brock Bovaird and Andy
Lawrence (first team), Jason
Paloskey and Chris Hughes (second
team), with Bovaird winning AMCC
Player of the Year and Hughes
sharing Newcomer of the Year.
THE LADY LIONS
CAPTURED THE AMCC crown
with a vengeful win over Pitt-
Bradford in the AMCC
Championship game in Erie Hall.
Head coach Rosalyn Fornari won
her 100th win at Behrend in the
same game to make the night
memorable. The women finished
the season with a 17-9 record, but
failed to qualify for the ECAC
Tournament. Carrie Nestor, Jen
O’Lare and Erin Phillips all were

The spring season saw some
success scattered throughout all
sports. Behrend added track and
field to their list of teams that include
baseball, softball, golf, and tennis.
BEHREND SOFTBALL
CAPTURED the AMCC crown this
past season after hosting the
tournament. The Lions defeated
Laßoche and blew away the rest of
their competition in the conference,
including a 49-0 trouncing of Pitt-
Greensburg. The Lions were
coached by Cindy Jacohelli.
THE BASEBALL FLAM
BATTLED for the AMCC
P&.zeria
Championship this past season, but
fell just short to Frostburg who won
the title. Behrend won a school
record. 24 games, entering their final
contests against Allegheny and Gros e
City. Behrend was coached by Paul
Bemm. The Lions will stay
determined to win the AMCC
Championship in the near future.
BEHREND TRACK AND FIELD
gave inaugural a new definition with
a shocking first season under Rich
Hoffman. The Behrend men earned a
national ranking ol 27 midway
through the season. Ihe men were the
first learn in Behrend's history to be
nked first in their respective region
THE MEN'S GOLF TEAM
finished fourth in the AMCC.'. Matt
Livingston was named to the first
team All-Conference team due to his
third place finish at the
Championships.
MEN'S TENNIS MADE SOME
'RAQUET' in the AMCC' after a slow
stall to the season that saw them go
0-3 to open their season. The men
were b-X entering the AMCC
Tournament where they were 2.-2.
Overall, the I .ions' athletic teams all
roared loudly in the AMCC this past
season and set new standards for
future Behrend teams. Many of these
successful athletes ami coaches will
be returning this season in hopes of
entering the 21st century in grand
stvle.
