The group did do other things besides these educational stops. They had a free night in Georgetown Friday night which was capped off with a political discussion in an ice cream shop led by Dr. Speel. On their own, students also went to such varied sites as the Holocaust Museum, the A snowy day at the White House Cheerleaders bring spirit to Behrend by Katie Galley wire services editor Not too many people can say that they have attended all the Behrend home basketball games, except for maybe the coaches and team members...and the cheerleaders. Thoughout it’s 50 year history, Be hrend has always had cheerleaders. The team has always been coed. This year, the cheerleaders helped root the Lady Lions to the AMCC Champion ships and the Behrend men to the ECAC Championships. This group of dedicated cheerers practice two hours a day, three days a week during the preseason. Through! basketball season, they practice two hours a day, twice a week. Then, of course, they are there to cheer for all the mens’ and women’s home basket ball games. The occasional away game will also make its way into their al ready busy schedule. The architec ture and sculptures were great.” All of the students who went to Washington had a great time, and, when it came time to leave for home on Saturday, no one wanted to leave. game cheering time might take away from academics and other social ac tivities, but the students say that it is worth the effort. “Cheerleading was an opportunity for me to get involved in an area outside of academics. Through this experience, I have gained contacts and communication skills which will be valuable for fu ture experiences,” commented Michelle Murosky, 02 ENG. At any given home basketball game, you can find the cheerleaders helping to get the crowd to partici pate in rooting for the home team. Led by Captain Sarah Orr, the group per forms numerous cheers, chants, dances and stunts to hype up the crowd of spectators. Stunts performed by the cheerleaders include liberites, cupies, heel-stretches, torches and, the crowd favorite, building mounts. If all those names sound like stunts which would be hard for the average person to do, that is because they are. To become a Behrend cheerleadering The friendships that were formed and the experiences that were gained from this trip will stick with the people who went for a lifetime. During tryouts, perspective cheerers must demonstrate strong physical at tributes. Jumping and stuntingfperforming stunts) are ex pected of all perspective cheerlead ers, and extra points are given for demonstrating advanced stunting and gymnastics ability. Next season the cheerleaders hope to have 14 females on the squad and a large group of male cheers. Goals for next season include putting to gether a competition squad in addi tion to the regular squad. The squad also hopes to cheer at more home games for different teams at Behrend. Tryouts for next years squad will be sometime in October. Watch for signs posted throughout the school. All enthusiastic Behrend sports fans are encourged to tryout in the fall.
